Gabriel healed faster than anyone I’d ever seen, his deep cuts already scabbed over like it had been days, not hours, since I’d sprung him from prison.

“I’m going to have so much fun teasing you about your rescue from the Super Max facility in Poughkeepsie.” I decided Lincoln was right; it was fun to say, especially when I saw how tight Gabriel’s mouth got.

Oh yeah, he hated that word.

“Pooo-Keeep-seeeee,” I sang, dodging away from his grabbing hands.

“If you keep it up, I will tape your mouth shut.”

“You can try… all darn Pooo-Keeep-Seee-daaaay.”

“Oh, my God. This is what you’re like when you get enough sleep?”

“And sex,” I interjected, since I definitely wanted to keep that on the table. Speaking of the table…

“I liked you better sleep deprived. I don’t know if I can tolerate a well-rested and sexually satisfied Andy.”

“How do you know I’m sexually satisfied? I might have faked it.”

“You did not fake it, and I always deliver.”

Cue the awkward pause. “Okay, uhm, let’s not go there right now,” I told him, refusing to let my good mood be ruined by something as trivial as past sexual partners, even though now I couldn’t quit thinking about them.

“We have bigger things to worry about. Besides, I’ve never loved anyone before you. Or maybe since you, it’s so confusing.”

My heart melted a little bit more.

Goop city, here I come.

From the doorway, Lincoln cleared his throat. He looked much better, a bit of color in his face, his hair combed over in some semblance of his normal style. Gabriel’s sweater hung loose on his thin frame, but seeing him alive made my heart happy.

One of these days I might quit picturing him with a bullet hole in his forehead.

“We had best get moving, Gabriel. The time for fun and games is past.”

“Hey,” I protested, “we like our fun and games, and you are not the boss of us.”

“Lincoln’s right, Andy.” All signs of levity in Gabriel’s voice faded away, and I knew playtime was, indeed, over. “We dodged the bullet, but I’m not about to lay down and wait for them to take another run at us.”

Suddenly he was the paragon of action, grabbing keys off the table, ushering us toward the door while I tried to find pants.

“I’ve already called Daws and Henry. They’ll meet us at the Flatiron. Sophia declared war on us, now I’m declaring war back. We take her out, we destroy Clayburn, and we get the word out to the masses.”

“We have to do this quickly, before they realize we’ve regrouped.” Lincoln tossed me a jacket, and I shrugged it on, cold air hitting me in the face when he swung open the front door.

“Any ideas how to play this?” I asked, since we’d shifted into serious planning mode, and I wanted to do my share. “They’ll be expecting something, especially Sophia.”

“Then we’ll come up with something she’d never suspect.”

“Out of curiosity, how do you plan on getting into the building? They’re sure to be watching.”

Gabriel hit a few buttons, and the garage door went up, revealing the biggest SUV I’d ever seen.
